Some say a Georgia Sweet onion is as sweet as an apple. You be the judge. A short-day type, these sweet yellow onions grow best in the South.
Bonnie onion seedlings are sold as bare-root bundles; each plant will start growing within days after you plant. Plant onions in early spring about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost. In warmer areas, you may also plant in fall to harvest the following spring. Per square foot of garden, onions are among the most productive crops.
Plant Spacing: 6 inches apart in rows 12 inches apart for full sized bulbs. Plants Per Person: 10 to 20 for fresh, 25 or more for fresh and storage.

Plant in raised beds or raised rows (furrows) in compost-enriched soil. Set seedlings 1 to 2 inches deep, covering roots, but don't bury the necks or they'll rot. Onion roots are shallow. Water steadily to keep the soil consistently moist until bulbs are full size. Give plants a good start by fertilizing early but stop feeding as the bulbs start to enlarge. As the bulbs develop they will be about halfway above ground. Don't pile mulch up next to them; they prefer to be bare.
Harvest and Use »
Onions tell you they are ready to pull from the ground when the tops begin to turn yellow and flop over. The bulbs will be about half above ground. After pulling, let the bulbs cure, tops intact, in a warm, dry spot for 7 to 10 days. Clip off tops and store in a cool, dry, ventilated place.. Bulbs in good condition (not bruised or cut) keep about a month in storage.
